Matt Cutts

Former Head of Webspam, Google

For a decade, he was the only Google engineer SEOs could name.

Matt Cutts led Google's Webspam Team and became, more or less by default, the public face of the company's Webmaster Guidelines. He later left search entirely to serve as Administrator of the United States Digital Service.

The video era

Between roughly 2009 and 2014, Cutts published hundreds of short answer videos. They were plainly shot and deliberately unhyped, and they established the boundary of what Google considered acceptable optimisation. Those boundaries — no paid links passing PageRank, no doorway pages, no cloaking — are still the baseline.

Technical contributions

He designed Google's SafeSearch filter and is a co-inventor on patents relating to web spam detection. The Penguin and Panda enforcement eras happened under his team's watch and reshaped the link economy permanently.
